Enjoy this 1.4 mile scenic Riverfront walking loop at the heart of RiverPlace. River Walk follows existing paved sidewalks and trails, crossing the Schuylkill River by way of the Penn Street and Schuylkill River Trail bridges.
Highlights include gorgeous views from the historic Penn Street Bridge, public art on the campus of Reading Area Community College, the Canal Heritage murals at the Franklin Street Guard Lock, the Schuylkill River Trail, solar-powered trail lights, Bertolet Landing, the site of the GiggleWorks at Palmer Children's Museum, and the R. M. Palmer Chocolate Company.
In the spring, this route is the focal point for viewing over one hundred flowering cherry trees during the annual Cherry Blossom Festival.
From Second and Penn Streets in Reading, follow RACC campus sidewalks toward the Schuylkill River, crossing Front Street to the Yocum Library and the Schuylkill River Trail (SRT). Follow the SRT down-River through the Canal Heritage Murals and over the River on the former Pennsylvania Railroad bridge. Continue 100' south down the SRT. At the third solar-powered trail light, turn left and follow the West Shore Trail up-River under the rail bridge to the Bertolet Landing and Fishing Dock. From this park, follow the sidewalk of First Avenue two blocks to Franklin Street and the site of the GiggleWorks at Palmer. Turn left and follow Franklin Street to Second Avenue, then right one block to Penn Avenue. Turn right and follow the south sidewalk of Penn Avenue to the Penn Street Bridge and back over the Schuylkill River.
A great lunchtime stroll, River Walk is just 1.4 miles and 22 minutes long. |
