We were very excited to hold a wonderful Tree Dedication Ceremony on Friday, September 19th, on the United Way Day of Caring.

RiverPlace on the Schuylkill was the host of the volunteer event.  The volunteer team revitalized Bertolet Dock in West Reading.  Most people didn't even know this place existed, but are now looking forward to coming back to enjoy this area on the riverfront.  Volunteers cleaned up litter, painted the dock, trimmed existing plants and planted new ones (mountain laurel and day lilies), constructed an entiredly new hiking trail that leads to an overlook at the old dam, and cleaned up the Schuylkill River Trail nearby!  It's a must see!!

There were 61 volunteers from various organizations: Suburban Water Testing Labs, West Reading Elm Street, Enersys, LCS '08 (United Way's Loan Campaign Specialists of 2008), Reading Truck & Body, WalkBikeBerks, The Schuylkill Greenway Association, and County Commissioner Kevin Barnhardt himself!

In honor of their 45th Anniversary, Suburban Water Testing Labs donated the 101st Cherry Tree to RiverPlace and became the first organization to "Adopt A Riverfront."

The officials that attended the Tree Dedication Ceremony were:

  • Joseph Pugliese on behalf of Congressman Jim Gerlach, U.S. House of Representative
  • Senator Mike O’Pake, Pennsylvania House of Representative
  • Representative Thomas R. Caltagirone, Pennsylvania House of Representatives
  • Bea Rivera on behalf of Representative Dante Santoni, Jr, Pennsylvania House
    of Representative
  • Commissioner Kevin S. Barnhardt, County of Berks
  • Nathalie Kulesa, Council President from West Reading Borough

  • Melissa Varone, Greater Reading Chamber of Commerce
  • Deb Millman, Greater Berks Development Fund
  • Connie Faylor, Ben Franklin Technology Partners
  • Shelia Tulli and Angie Finney, United Way
