Island of Moss

Location: In front of State Office Building on Penn Street

Artist: Harry Bertoia; Bally, PA

Date: 1967

Material: copper and bronze

Description: This piece looks very much the way moss would probably look if magnified. Many people believe it resembles underwater growth swaying in the current. If you watch it long enough, it appears to move as though rippling in the wind. The copper surface used to produce the green patina has been corroding and washing away due to exposure. A professional hot wax treatment is recommended to prevent further corrosion.
