Kissinger's Lock
Status: Completed
Description:
Kissinger's Lock and Dam were located on this site. Kissinger's was Lock 45
and Dam 22 in the Schuylkill Navigation System. The Reading Canal began at Kissinger's and stretched for 2.59 miles through the Port of Reading. The Kissinger Dam had a a height of 14 feet and an overfall of 296 feet. The associated Lock 45 had a loft of 6 feet. Although the locks were numbered by the company, locks were often known by the canal men according to their location or the lock tenders who kept the lock
Thanks to the assistance of Pennsylvania Canal Society and Kutztown Archaeology program, the walls of Kissinger's Lock are once again revealed.
We invite you to visit the site along the River in Dana Memorial Park between the Buttonwood Street and Schuylkill Avenue bridges.
